'IF SOMETHING CHASES YOU…'
Well, folks… there it is.
After a few days that have felt like several months, we've finally been treated to our first significant look at J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — said look coming in the form of two teaser clips, which, though excruciatingly brief, still manage to provide more than a few talking points.
The first clip — which debuted on YouTube as well as various social media channels — is a very literal baptism by fire. We're shown Owen, Claire, and an as-yet-unnamed character played by Justice Smith, as they seek shelter from a stampede of dinosaurs fleeing the eruption of the film's now-infamous volcano.
In what will come as a surprise to absolutely no one, I've been imagining what we'd see in the first glimpse of Fallen Kingdom for quite some time… pretty much since I walked out of the cinema on June 11, 2015. As time went on and we learned more about the film, my various imaginings began to take form, to come a little more into focus. Somehow, though, that first glimpse still managed to take me by surprise. Whatever I was expecting, it wasn't anywhere near as explosive — or dinosaur-filled… — as this.
And then, of course, there's the second clip…
The recently-leaked Baryonyx! The Rex!
Teasers exist to build excitement, and these do precisely that. As demonstrated by the first in particular — the only one available in HD at the time of writing — the film looks incredible. Obviously, the final product may well differ, but — for now — the CGI looks great, and though there's still way too much blue in there for my liking, the colour grading seems (blessedly) a little warmer. The creepy rendition of the classic theme is appropriately ominous, too, and the volcano looks well-and-truly excellent. (I really hadn't been sure what to expect from it, given that there was literally no mention of it in Jurassic World.)
Of course, as much as I might want to, I can't forget how disappointed I was by that first film, and there are definitely a few things in there that stirred an all-too-familiar disquiet — well, one thing in particular: Owen.
As he ran down that hill in the first clip, and declared that, 'This is gonna be awesome…' in the second — completely shattering the unsettling effect of the music — I found myself, once again, seeing Chris Pratt rather than Owen Grady. I'll be the first to admit that this is my problem, and not necessarily the films', but I'd sincerely hoped for a more serious character than the one Owen has proven to be, and so I can't help but find Chris Pratt playing just another version of Chris Pratt somewhat disappointing.
Still, I'm not making any definitive judgements yet. They have to have a broad appeal, these teasers, and a little levity undeniably goes a long way. At the end of the week, the full trailer will speak for itself.
Unsurprisingly, I can't wait to hear what it has to say.
